Wear Testing Services
The term wear testing generally applies to a test method whereby a material or coating is subjected to friction or repetitive motion. While the general term wear testing is a broad category, there are sub-sets of this type of testing which are specific to certain types of materials or required test parameters.
To better understand how friction relates to wear testing, it is good to understand the scientific field of tribology. Tribology is the study of rubbing surfaces. This can include the sub-fields of friction, wear, and lubrication. Each of these sub-fields consists of very specific testing requirements and testing systems.
Our specific area of expertise focuses on the mechanical wear process. We utilize advanced programmable robotic arms to manually perform repetitive wear processes. These robotic arms can be used to actuate switches over many cycles, or rubbing motions for a given amount of time-based on the required testing standards.

Abrasion Testing Services
In conjunction with our wear testing services, we are also able to perform abrasion testing. While these terms are often used interchangeably, they do have different focal points. According to ASTM, while wear is what happens to the materials being tested, abrasion is the action that causes wear.
Abrasion testing is often performed to evaluate the ruggedness of coatings and surfaces to better understand how a product may endure a lifetime of wearing friction.
For our abrasion testing, we utilize our programmable robotic arms to perform varying motions to cycle parts and assemblies at varying acceleration or deceleration while measuring resistance occurring during the test process.
Both wear and abrasion testing are utilized to evaluate the result of fatigue and friction to estimate the approximate lifespan of a given product. As an A2LA accredited test laboratory with a full array of environmental testing capabilities, we have the unique ability to perform wear and abrasion testing with combined temperature and humidity stimuli. This data can then be used to help improve the design and reliability of the product.
